What changes the price

  • Marks and countries. Each mark and each office is usually a watch of its own.
  • How often. The journals come out every week; a monthly report can use up most of a 30-day US window.
  • Who reads the results. A lawyer’s time costs more than software.

What it costs to act on a match

The watch is the cheap part. If a similar mark matters to you, these are the office fees.

United States: USPTO, Trademark Trial and Appeal Board

  • a first extension of the time to oppose, 30 days: no fee;
  • a first extension of 90 days for good cause, or 60 more days after a 30-day one: $200;
  • a final extension of 60 days, with the applicant’s consent or in extraordinary circumstances: $400;
  • a notice of opposition: $600 per class.

Fees for filing online, 37 CFR §2.6, in force on 1 September 2026.

United Kingdom: UK IPO

  • form TM7a, notice of threatened opposition, which adds a third month: no fee;
  • form TM7, notice of opposition: the fee in the IPO’s trade mark forms and fees (updated for 1 April 2026).

A lawyer’s fees come on top, if you use one.

Is a trademark watch worth it?

The opposition period is the time to object before a mark is registered; once it is registered, removing it takes a separate action — a cancellation in the US, an invalidation in the UK. A watch is insurance: most weeks bring nothing, and “nothing similar this week” is an answer too.
